RFID Frequencies

RFID technology works through transmissions among different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Click the links below for more information about the possibilities of RFID in different bands of the spectrum:

Super Low Frequency.

Used for:

  • 125 kHz proximity cards and other devices; and
  • 134.2 kHz animal identification tagging.

These technologies use inductive coupling to power passive devices.

 

Medium to High Frequency.

Used for:

  • 1.75 mHz to 9.5 mHz Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS); and
  • 13.56 mHz technology:
  • Some Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) applications;
  • ISO 14443 proximity cards;
  • Memory cards (such as MIFARE® and Legic technology);
  • ISO 15693 vicinity smartcards and Tag-It and I-Code technologies; and
  • ISO 18000-3 item identification.

 

Ultra High Frequency.

Used for:

  • ISM;
  • Listen Before Talk; and
  • Short Range Devices (SRD) .

Ultra High Frequency RFID technology relies on backscatter coupling to power passive tags and relay information to the reader

 

Super High Frequency.

Used for:

  • ISM; and
  • Automatic Vehicle Identification.

These devices also use backscatter coupling for power and information transmission.
